It’s a great time to encourage your kids to learn about money and develop good financial habits.

  • Free Savings Accounts for Kids from 0 to 17

  • Learn about managing money with Banzai for kids of all ages!
Teaching kids about savings early is an important step in helping them to become savvy about money as they get older.
A great way to get them started is to set up a savings account for your child(ren) at the credit union. You can even open sub-accounts for different savings goals you kids may have.
If your child(ren) gets a regular allowance, save time by setting up recurring transfers from your Town & Country account to their savings account. Then they can watch their money grow.

Youth Checking

Helping your teen(s) develop good money habits before they to go off to college or start “adulting” is important.
A great way to get your teen(s) started is to open a checking account with a debit card at the credit union. Teens as young as 14 are eligible for a Town & Country checking account.
Teens can learn to manage their money by using online banking and Town & Country’s mobile app. This makes it quick and easy to deposit checks from their part-time jobs or birthday gifts.
Plus, it is easy to transfer money to your teen to pay their allowance or gas money. An added bonus is you can monitor their account and spending online.

FAQs

How old does a child need to be to open a checking account with a debit card?

Children as young as 14 can open a checking account with a free debit card. Plus, there are no monthly service fees on the checking account.

What do we need to do to open a youth savings or checking account?

Opening a youth account is easy. Be sure to bring the original copy of the child’s Social Security card and/or original copy of their birth certificate.

What happens with the account when my teenager turns 18?

Once a teenager becomes 18, a $25 minimum balance is required in their savings account.  The parent, grandparent, or guardian can sign off the account if they want to at that time.

Can I transfer money to my child’s account?

Absolutely. Through online banking you can make one-time transfers to cover things like gas or spending money or set up automatic reoccurring transfers for things like allowance.

At what age can my child use online banking?

All Town & Country account users are eligible to sign up for online banking and our mobile app.

What ways can my child deposit or withdraw money from their account?

Children of all ages can visit a branch to deposit or withdraw money from their savings account. Teenagers 14 and over with a checking account and debit card can use an ATM or download the Town & Country app to make mobile deposits.

If one parent or guardian opens the account with the child, can another adult be added to the account, too?

Yes, but both parents or guardians would need to give permission and be present to add the second parent (or guardian) to the child’s account once it has been opened.   Some families find it easier to have both parents (or guardians) present at the time of account opening.

Can my teenager have overdraft protection on their checking account?

No. Children under the age of 18 are not eligible for overdraft protection on their account.
